Grab your 3-D glasses, but keep the popcorn and snacks hidden, especially if it’s after midnight. A classic horror film comes to life as a frightfully fun memory for a senior designer in the Creative Services department here at Funko. Cue the lights and let’s get started!

Name/Job Title at Funko:

Michael Harring – Senior Designer (Creative Services)

What is your first Funko Pop! or collectible that you bought, and where do you keep it?

My very first Pop! was a Jason Voorhees that I fought for at a white elephant gift exchange. I loved the adorable treatment of such a cold and vicious killer and immediately went out and bought Stripe (from Gremlins). The two of them stand watch over my desk with the rest of my monsters and ghouls.

How does this Pop! or collectible inspire your work?

With the success and ubiquity of Pops!, it’s easy to forget how revolutionary and surprising they were when they first came out. Each one is a master class in distilling complex ideas and emotions into a small, compact shape. As a designer, they’re a reminder that unconventional approaches (like an adorable serial killer) can surprise and inspire a strong and lasting connection with audiences by going against expectations.
